A Resident Story…

I am a 38 year old grandmother raising a two year old grandson. I left a verbally abusive relationship in 2002 and a short time later my grandson, who was five months old at the time, came to live with me. To be honest, we have had our ups and down over the last two years, but nothing compares to the feeling of desperation I had when I almost lost custody of my grandson because of my financial situation. Thank goodness for Bethlehem Place. My grandson and I moved here in October of 2004 and we've come a long way in the last six months.

At first my grandson was very shy and wasn't talking. While attending life skills courses at Bethlehem Place, I would leave him at the Early Learning Centre, but it was very difficult for me as he would become upset and cried every time I left him. Thanks to the patience and understanding of the caring staff and volunteers in the Centre, my grandson is now blossoming.

He is talking and enjoying the company of others. He attends daycare five days a week and cheerfully waves bye to me and says, "see you later, Nanny". The Bethlehem support staff have been wonderful and have been a great help to me. I feel confident that we will do very well when we move on from here thanks to the support we have received from the staff at Bethlehem Projects of Niagara.
